Town & Country: Going to Extremes

PETA’s Ingrid Newkirk shakes up the world in the cause of animal rights

Who would have thought a conservative place like Hampton Roads would be the home of America’s most successful radical group?

Yep, The New Yorker claims Norfolk-based PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals ) is exactly that. The designation was made in a profile on PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk by Michael Specter titled “The Extremist” in the magazine’s April 14 issue.

By far the most successful radical organization is The New Yorker’s assessment. PETA raises $15 million a year, most of it in small contributions from its 750,000 members and supporters. End of Excerpt
