Even if you are one of those people that claims to "never get sick," we hope you don't underestimate the importance of having a doctor you trust easily accessible to both yourself and your family. This year's comprehensive Top Docs listing can assist you in finding great physicians specializing in an abundance of medical needs. Plus, our special focus on general practitioners can also help you discover a reliable go-to doctor that everyone needs to keep them in great overall health. Our top general practitioners (a.k.a. family doctors or primary care physicians) who received the most votes in that category were chosen for the doctor profiles that begin on page 64. Also check out our list of helpful questions to ask your PCP and preventive screenings and tests you should schedule depending on your age. If you can't remember the last time you visited a doctor, now is the time to pick up the phone and make that appointment.

About the Top Docs Listings Hampton Roads Magazine sent more than 4,600 surveys to physicians currently practicing in the Hampton Roads region, a list acquired from the American List Council, a subsidiary of ADVO. In our survey, we asked area physicians a simple question—what doctor would you call if you or a loved one needed medical care? Each physician was asked to recommend one or two doctors in 26 specialties. Our survey response rate was more than 4 percent, and approximately 996 doctors were nominated. Those who received the most votes in each specialty are listed as the Top Docs in this issue. After compiling the list, Hampton Roads Magazine collected the practice information of each doctor and made sure all physicians were in good standing with the Virginia Board of Medicine by checking the board's Practitioner Information website. (Visit www.vahealthprovider.com to check the status of any licensed physician yourself.)
